Thursday 23rd June ( The Birthday day)
I awoke quite early, the other girls in the dorm were packing to leave, I got up and went for a shower. Once J was up and ready, we headed down to breakfast and to join the rest of the gang. Strange breakfast, a mix of Hams and Jams (some of which wasn’t jam but in fact jelly) and bread rolls. Then a plan (sort of) for the day was discussed. But 1st things ….presents for the birthday girl J. Blue Hair extensions….she had her blue hair back…if just temporarily.

Off to the train station we trotted, heading into the centre of Berlin we were… and three super efficient trains later we were at the Brandenburger Tor or Brandenburg Gate.

twas surrounded by tourists and we appeared to have arrived there at the same time as someone important which was evident by the large number of security persons mingling around and also the huge number of fancy blacked out cars with flags oh and the crowd of people, no idea who it was though.
Moving on, past the oddest bunch of street performers who’ll try and scam you into paying for a photo you didn’t want in the 1st place (another story for next time) and we went to try and find the Memorial to the murdered jews of Europe.
It was a super hot, sunny day and I was repping the leafs with my Maple leafs t-shirt, not a jersey mind, would have melted.
So, we headed to the Memorial, it was supposed to be quite daunting and sobering. I hadn’t realised it was going to be so big and I mean huge…
It consists of a 19,000 square metres (4.7 acres) site covered with 2,711 concrete slabs or “stelae”, arranged in a grid pattern on a sloping field. The stelae are 2.38 m (7 ft 10 in) long, 0.95 m (3 ft 1 in) wide and vary in height from 0.2 to 4.8 m (8 in to 15 ft 9 in).
it had rules for how to conduct oneself such as no running, climbing on blocks or loud noises, alas most visitors chose to ignore one or all these rules, using it as a maze. I tried to get a true feel for what it was trying to convey, it does seem a little controversial and some say a bit unnecessary.
…shall write the rest of this when I get back from my scotland travels, its late I need to be up early and I can’t really think what to say
